The world stood still as Donald Trump emerged victorious at the just concluded United States Presidential election with most world leaders including President Bola Tinubu congratulating the President-Elect.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ali, have all congratulated Donald Trump for winning the US presidential election.
It would be recalled that Trump defeated Vice-President Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party.
“As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.
“From growth and security to innovation and tech, I know that the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come”, they stated.
Ethiopian President Ali said “with Trump in the Oval Office, Ethiopia will strengthen its relationship with the US.”
In his acceptance speech, Trump said among other things that “around me, hundreds of enthusiastic supporters were delirious with happiness over his success – some in tears, others hugging complete strangers.”
Flanked by family and key supporters such as the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, the 45th – and soon to be the 47th – president of the United States strolled on stage and revisited many of the themes and anecdotes I have become so familiar with, as I followed around in this campaign.
“But this time, the circumstances – a near-certain victory and a return to the White House – meant everything took on a new significance. He spoke of an actual programme that could become reality”, he said.
US Presidential Election lesson for Nigeria is that beyond the outcome of the much anticipated presidential election keenly contested between Republican Donald Trump and Democratic Kamala Harris won by Trump, the entire process brought out the beauty of democracy in relation to the electoral process.
The election took place on November 5, 2024 and the winner was announced the next day, the president-elect, Mr. Trump, read his speech accepting his election as the US president.
Within 24hours, the presidential election was conducted and concluded.
This is unlike in Nigeria where the electoral process remains clumsy, lacking credibility as a result of undue political interruptions by incumbents and unscrupulous politicians and parties.
Political observers have noted repeatedly that a free and fair election begins from a transparent and accountable process that allows the democratic choice of voters at the poll to count.
Free and fair elections reduce the cost of elections and their attendant tension.
There was no report indicating incidents of vote buying, thuggery, threatening of voters, official compromises by electoral officers, or security officials deployed to maintain peace, law and order were protecting thugs thump printing ballot papers in favour of a political aspirant.
Meanwhile, Ogun State 2023 New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) governorship candidate and South West chieftain of the party, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo has extended warm congratulations to newly re-elected U.S. President Donald Trump, expressing confidence that his leadership will bring lasting stability to the world.
Speaking to journalists early Wednesday morning at his office in Ibafo, Ogun state, a statement which was made available to Journalists in Ibadan, Ajadi hailed and described Trump’s victory as a “divine intervention,” stating that it brings blessings beyond American borders.
“President Trump’s win is a powerful message of hope, not just for Americans but for people all around the world,” Ajadi declared. He highlighted Trump’s role as a stabilizing force amid current global tensions, especially among nations where conflicts have sparked fears of a potential world war.
Ambassador Ajadi expressed his optimism, predicting that Trump’s leadership could help avert the “looming world war” by promoting diplomacy and de-escalating tensions among powerful countries.
“We believe Trump has the resolve and influence to bring major players to the negotiating table and promote peaceful resolutions to conflicts,” Ajadi remarked. His re-election represents an opportunity for constructive dialogue that will ease global anxieties and strengthen efforts for international peace.”
He went on to describe Trump’s diplomatic approach as potentially beneficial for emerging markets and African nations.
“This victory symbolizes a global movement toward fairness and mutual respect in international relations,” Ajadi said, expressing hope that Trump’s presidency would foster partnerships with nations like Nigeria, advancing development through collaboration on trade, technology, and security.
Ajadi also emphasized Trump’s commitment to national sovereignty and self-reliance, viewing these principles as valuable lessons for African countries. “Trump encourages nations to stand strong and use their resources wisely,” he said, “and this message can inspire African leaders to pursue sustainable, self-reliant growth.”
