At a time in the life of the country when hunger, insecurity and other incidents take the precious lives of Nigerians, road accidents which occur frequently have been known to worsen the situation and increase the daily death toll.
The latest instance is the death of over 19 persons yesterday morning in a ghastly motor accident at Hawan Kibo area of Riyom Local Government Council in Plateau State.
The incident comes barely one week after gunmen killed five persons in some rural communities of Bokkos Local Government council of Plateau state.
Our correspondent reports that Hawan Kibo is approximately 60 kilometers from Jos, the state capital.
Nigerian Pilot also recalled that a Kano Pillars FC U-19 team was also involved in a road accident on Monday while travelling to Jos for their match day 5 fixtures in the U-19 Youth League.
Several players and the driver sustained various degrees of injuries and were immediately rushed to hospital for treatment and fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Plateau State Command’s spokesman, Peter Yakubu, confirmed Tuesday’s incident to newsmen in Jos, stating that all passengers in the vehicle perished.
He said, “No one survived the accident. The sole person taken to the hospital later succumbed. Eighteen died at the scene, while one died at the hospital.’’
A staff member at Riyom Trauma Hospital told our correspondent that the victims’ corpses were brought to the hospital yesterday morning.
She said, “All victims brought to us had already died. Some bodies were unidentifiable due to severe mutilation. As I speak, all corpses have been transferred to a Jos mortuary due to electricity challenges in Riyom Local Government Council.”
The staff member added that the vehicle involved was traveling from Adamawa State to Abuja when the accident occurred.
Our correspondent reports that Hawan Kibo has experienced recurring motor accidents due to the poor condition of the road, prompting citizens to lament about the situation.
