Journalists from various media organizations in Bauchi State are undergoing a two day training workshop aimed at strengthening media engagement in promotion of Multiple Micronutrient Supplement MMS for maternal health.
The workshop which was organized by a Non Governmental Organizations Alive and Thrive fhi360 was to provide media practitioners with the tools and knowledge necessary to effectively cover and advocate for Multiple Micronutrient Supplement MMS, an intervention for improving maternal and child health across Nigeria.
Dr Auwalu Kawu, a senior technical adviser Social and Behavior Change SBC Communication Alive and Thrive fhi360 explained that Journalists are critical stakeholders in promoting Maternal Health issues, hence their invitation for the two day training workshop held yesterday at Yimir Hotel Bauchi.
Dr Auwalu said Multiple Micronutrient Supplement (MMS) contains 15 essential vitamins and minerals for both mother and baby which according to him reduce the risk of anemia, low birth weight, preterm birth, and stillbirth more effectively than Iron Folic Acid IFA.
He added that the essential nutritional support by MMS including vitamins A, C, D, zinc, calcium among others, improves cognitive development in children and reduces neonatal mortality.
The SBC officer stated that the workshop is determined to increase awareness among Journalists by reaching a wider audience and informing them about the importance of Multiple Micronutrient Supplement MMS for pregnant women.
He hoped that at the end of the training, participants would address misconceptions and promote a positive outlook on MMS among pregnant women and their families.
Speaking on behalf of the Bauchi state primary healthcare development board, Isah Sani a director PHC in the agency pledged working collaboration with various stakeholders in the state, aimed at improving the maternal, infant and young child nutrition MIYCN in the state.
