The Customs Area Controller CAC in charge of Tin Can Island Port Command Comptroller Nnadi Dera has said that the implementation of strategic programmes ,as well as the introduction of innovative ideas by the top management of the Nigerian Customs Service NCS for blocking loop holes to revenue leakages has aided to increase revenue generation and contribute meaningfully to the nations economic survival.

While briefing the press on the rising revenue profile of his command and seizures of Drugs and pharmaceuticals, recorded during the last Quarter of 2024, Compt.Dera said these achievements could not have been possible without the active support of the CG who created the enabling environment for officers and men to excel.

Answering a reporter’s question who demanded to know why despite the down turn of economic activities and low imports, high foreign exchange rate and low income, the command had achieved its annual revenue target and even surpassed it before the year end.

Compt.Nnadi outlined some of the programmes enunciated by the Comptroller General of Customs,Adewale Adeniyi at inception of his administration, which changed the narrative in Customs by providing Officers and Men with the tools they needed to detect fraudulent practices ,and blocking revenue leakages. He said,”that makes it practically impossible for shippers and their agents to evade duty payments”.

The strategy evolved by Customs enabled officers to be trained and retrained in various aspects of their jobs making them more efficient at tracking economic saboteurs and preventing them from defrauding the nation or bringing in harmful items into the country.

Compt.Nnadi said the transformative agenda embarked on by Compt.General Adeniyi in Customs, opened up sources for establishing working relations with international partners ,who have collaborated with Nigerian Customs in sharing useful information for apprehending or detecting smugglers based on mutual trust

In effect, the Comptroller noted that most importers had resolved to do the right thing by voluntarily complying with guidelines, rules and regulations of payment of correct duties through official means, instead of engaging in malpractices, knowing that they would eventually be caught by customs and made to pay more or forfeit everything,Importers and their agents have opted to punch their entries pay duties, taxes, etc through official quarters than forge import documents, make wrong entry declarations or concealments, thereby increasing government revenues.

The increase in compliance level of shippers who took advantage of various trade facilitation opportunities provided by Customs also led to revenue increase as well as the prudent management of resources and accountability promoted by CG Adeniyi’s administration.

Compt.Nnadi said,’with innovations introduced the Nigerian Customs Service made efforts to strengthen compliance,we reviewed valuation principles,so that there’s reward for compliance, and consequences for non compliance”.

He commented on some of the projects implemented by the Customs, such as the Advance Rolling,Traders Save Time and more, which were borne out of a Study that served as platform for identifying the loop holes for revenue leakages, and devising strategies and measures for closing up the gaps.

The Comptroller also attributed his command’s success at recording increased revenue to the improvement of Port road infrastructure by the Federal Government. He said this has made it easier for port users to access the ports without delays and encumberances. He emphasised that though many importers had opted to comply voluntarily with official standards, however noted that some deviants were not willing to pay but try to evade payments.Giving a stern warning, the Comptroller advised people who want to try their luck, only to be caught by Customs and regret,to desist from the practise,or be ready to face the consequences.
