President Bola Tinubu has approved the dissolution of the Ministry of Niger Delta and the Ministry of Sports Development as part of a reform of the nation’s federal ministries.
The decisions were taken at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided by the President on Wednesday in Abuja, aimed to streamline regional development efforts across the country.
For the Ministry of Niger Delta, a new Ministry of Regional Development will now oversee all regional development commissions.
This includes agencies such as the Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, and the North East Development Commission.
Also, the functions of the Ministry of Sports will now be taken over by the National Sports Commission, which will assume responsibility for the management and development of sports nationwide.
The FEC, has in addition, approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy in an effort to consolidate and enhance the nation’s tourism and culture.
Meanwhile, Nigerians who have reacted to the development think that President Tinubu’s decisions fall short of expectation and therefore disappointing.
The commentators, who spoke on condition of anonymity, reasoned that the president should have done some clean sweep and bring in new hands that would live up to expectations.
