Some Youths in Ondo State on Wednesday stormed the state headquarters of the National Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, in Akure, demanding the removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola over alleged fraternization with some political parties ahead of the November 16 governorship election in the state.
The youths who carried placards with different inscriptions described the allegations against Mrs Babalola as unhealthy and unprofessional which could undermine the election process.
Speaking on behalf of the youths, one of the protesters, Ijanusi Olawale, alleged that Mrs Balalola had been romancing with some political parties demanding the removal of the INEC REC for the sake of the election.
He said the youths demand a free and fair election, asking the INEC not to be biased but transparent and ensure free and fair election in the state.
Addressing the protesters, the state administrative secretary of INEC, Mr Biodun Amosu thanked the protesters for ensuring that the protest was peaceful.
Amosun who assured the protesters that the commission will look into the matter also stressed that the commission will ensure that their votes count during election.
He said “One thing we must confirm is that peaceful protest is allowed in our democracy. To us, you have not done anything bad. Thank you for being peaceful. Let us assure you that the issue will be handled by the INEC chairman. The chairman will look into the demand.
“One thing which we assure you is that election in Ondo State will count. We can assure you that once you have your agents in your polling booth, you man your votes, you protect your votes, nothing can happen.
